NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team fell to No. 9 Texas, 8-1, in the second half of Sunday doubleheader at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Jarod McAuliff pitched five innings and two-thirds, struck out two and allowed five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits. Oklahoma is now 20-15 (8-7 Big 12) while Texas is 31-10 (9-6 Big 12). Today's attendance was 2,517, a home season-high for the Sooners.
"Texas just out-pitched us and out-hit us," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "There's no secret to what happened out there, we just couldn't get anything going and we weren't getting it done on the mound. We had some opportunities, but we couldn't put anything together. They just kept coming up with great defensive plays in both ballgames today."
To lead off UT's half of the second inning, Eric Sultemeier reached third base on an error by OU center fielder Reggie Willits and later scored on a Curtis Thigpen sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0. Texas extended its lead to three when both Tim Moss and Brandon Fahey drove in runs in the fifth inning.
The Sooners got into the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth, as Denver Kitch grounded out to score Matt Bose. UT answered with three runs in the sixth to make the score 6-1. Texas scored a run in the eighth and one more in the ninth for the final 8-1 margin of victory.
Michael Bradbury, David Purcey, Evan Greusel, Buddy Blair and Ryan WIlliams all made appearances in relief in today's ball game. Greusel has now made 71 appearances on his OU career, tied with Casey Mendenhall for second in school history in that category. Senior Rocky Cherry is first on that list with 78 career appearances.
Alan Bomer (5-2), a junior transfer from Iowa State, picked up the win for Texas after throwing 7.1 innings and giving up just one run on five hits.
The Sooners will return to action on Tuesday as the TCU Horned Frogs will visit Norman for a 6:30 p.m. contest. Texas-Arlington plays at OU's L. Dale Mitchell Park on Wednesday, also a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
