FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Sophomore Leslie Dunlap cleared the third best height for her this season but finished 14th in the women's pole vault in first day action Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
OU's other Friday competitors included redshirt freshman Aldwynn Sappleton in the 800-meter run and freshman Jason Stanley in the 60-meter hurdles. Sappleton ran his second best time of the season, 1:50.34, but finished 13th overall. The top eight times advanced to Saturday's final.
Stanley, who has run the hurdles only four times this season because of injuries, false started Friday and was disqualified. The Sooner freshman, assigned to lane 6, was one of two hurdlers in his heat to false start (the other was in the lane next to Stanley). One other runner did not finish and another runner did not start the race, leaving only two hurdlers to finish that heat.
Amy Linnen of Arizona won the pole vault title, clearing 14-10.25 to set collegiate, NCAA meet and Tyson Track Center records.
Dunlap cleared 13-3.5, a mark that was the final height cleared by five other vaulters. The six-way tie at the height was broken by misses at earlier heights. Ninth-place went to Ebbie Metzinger of Purdue who missed her first vault at the opening height of 12-5.5, then cleared her first attempt at 12-11.5 and 13-3.5 before missing three times at 13-7.25. There was a four-way tie for 10th as the four cleared on their second attempts at 13-3.5. Each of the four had no misses through the first two heights. Dunlap cleared the opening height of 12-5.5 on her second attempt, then cleared 12-11.5 on her first try. She cleared her final height, 13-3.5, on her third attempt.
For Dunlap, the final vault was better than last year's NCAA mark of 12-7.75 but the overall finish wasn't as good. The future looks bright, though, for the Choctaw sophomore as seven of the 13 vaulters who finished ahead of her are seniors and three are juniors.
OU will have two entries in the men's pole vault which starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Michael McNamara is ranked fourth entering the competition and Michael Westlund is ranked sixth. The men's 1600-meter relay, ranked 11th, will compete at 8:10 p.m. Saturday. The scheduled runners on that relay include All-Americans Raoul Harvey, Ernest Lewis, Moses Washington and Sappleton. Brontez Steele is the alternate.
