NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma Sooners defeated Missouri 10-9 in thrilling fashion in the Big 12 season-opener for both teams at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Oklahoma trailed the Tigers 9-5 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, however a four-run rally pushed the game to extra innings. In the twelfth inning, Denver Kitch led off with a single to right field and after stealing second base, scored when Reggie Willits knocked a base hit into center field. OU cranked out 16 hits to improve to 9-4 (1-0 Big 12) on the season, while Missouri fell to 6-5 (0-1 Big 12).
"This was a great college baseball game," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We got clutch hits when we needed them and it was important for this young team to never give up like this. To come from behind and have quality at bats when you're down, that will certainly get our confidence level going."
Down four runs, Charlie Frasier began OU's ninth-inning rally with a single to right, followed by a Jason Fransz single to right field. Matt Bose then hit an RBI double to center field to make the score 9-6. Tyler Johnson reached first after being hit by a pitch and Kitch drove in two runs with a base hit to left. Willits singled to bring home another run and even the score before MU reliever Garrett Broshuis got out of the jam.
Kitch went 4-for-6 in today's game, with three RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Willits went 3-for-6 with three RBI, including the game-winner, while Bose was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Eddie Cornejo added three hits and scored a run.
Mark Roberts (2-1) earned the win for Oklahoma by pitching an inning, giving up just one walk. Broshuis (1-2) took the loss for the Tigers, after pitching three innings and giving up five runs on seven hits.
"A comeback like this means a lot," said Cochell. "There was a lot on the line today, with us opening conference play, but this was a good way to get the Big 12 season going. We need to come out tomorrow and build on this momentum.
Oklahoma will battle the Tigers at 1 p.m. tomorrow, as senior Evan Greusel (2-0) will take the mound for the Sooners.
