Rocky Cherry picked up the win as OU defeated California-Riverside in the first game of a saturday doubleheader.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team won the first game of a doubleheader on Sat ur day at the Riverside Sports Complex, 5-1, to run its season mark to 8-2. Rocky Cherry (2-2) picked up his second win of the season after throw ing seven innings and a third, striking out seven and giving up just one run on six hits. Mark Roberts came in for Cherry in the eighth inning and closed the door on UCR, picking up his first save of the year.

In the first inning, Oklahoma benefitted from two errors by shortstop Rich Hofman as leadoff man Reggie Willits scored his eighth run of the season. Willits then singled in the second inning and drove in DH Luke ALexander, who led off the inning with a single to center field. OU continued its scoring in the eighth inning when freshman Matt Bose doubled home Eddie Cornejo. The run driven in was Bose's 11th of the season.

In the ninth inning, Spencer Wyman had an RBI single and after being inserted as a pinch runner, Matt Arkison scored on a wild pitch for OU. Luke Alexander had two base hits on the game for the Sooners.

Chris Smith (4-1) took the loss for UC-Riverside after giving up two runs on three hits in 8.1 innings of work. Smith entered today's game with a perfect record, a 1.32 ERA and 28 stirkeouts in 34 innings pitched. From the third inning through the eighth stanza, Smith retired 18 Soon ers in a row. He finished the game with six strikeouts, however he gave up four runs on seven hits.

The Oklahoma-UCR series was scheduled to have been played in Norman, however winter weather in central Oklahoma forced the Sooners to travel west for the three-game set. Oklahoma will once again battle the High land ers this afternoon and the teams will play a 1 p.m. game tomorrow. Buddy Blair (2-0) will take the mound for OU in today's second game.
