GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The University of Oklahoma softball team opened the 2002 season in impressive fashion as returning All-American Jennifer Stewart pitched a perfect game to lead the seventh-ranked Sooners to a 4-0 win over host Texas-Arlington in the UTA Tournament Friday afternoon. The senior lefty struck out 10 batters and kept the Mavericks off base for the complete game victory to begin the season for herself and the Sooners with a 1-0 record. UTA fell to 3-4 on the year.
It marked the second time in Stewart's OU career that the Yukon, Okla., native threw a perfect game. The accomplishment also distinguishes her as the only Sooner in program history to toss two perfect games. Stewart's other perfect game performance occurred in 1999 against Wichita State.
"I thought we came out very excited to open the season," said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso on the program's 11th-straight season-opening win. "I liked the way that Jennifer Stewart stepped up today and said 'follow me!'"
"This win is very exciting for all of us and gives us some special meaning for what lies ahead."
Christy Ring (2-for-3) helped provide Stewart with the necessary run support in the game. The senior leftfielder scored two runs in the game, scoring her first one in the top of the first inning. Ring led off the game with a single, was sacrificed to second, reached third on a base hit by junior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (2-for-3) and crossed home plate when Braitsch was caught in a run down at second base.
Freshman catcher Christina Enea (0-for-3) put another run on the board for the Sooners in the next inning when a three base error by the Maverick's rightfielder allowed her to score on a sacrifice fly by OU junior rightfielder Jennifer Stump (1-for-3) in the following at bat.
Enea and Stump also figured in on Oklahoma's final two runs of the game. After the first two batters of the inning reached base on singles, Stump laced a double to bring Ring home from second and move junior centerfielder Erin Evans (1-for-2) over to third. Enea then hit into a fielder's choice which allowed Evans to score.
