NORMAN, Okla. -
The OU track and field teams will host the Sooner Indoor, the final indoor meet of the 2002 season, Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Facility. The field events will begin at 10 a.m. with the first event scheduled on the track at 12:30 p.m. The men's mile relay will be the final event and it is scheduled for 4:40 p.m. Admission is free and the best place to park is at the Duck Pond lot off Brooks, just north of the facility.
National Rankings
The Sooner men are ranked fifth in the nation in this week's Trackwire top 25. The OU men are the highest ranked of nine Big 12 men's and women's teams in the poll.
The Teams
Joining the Sooners in the field are full teams from Abilene Christian, Barton County and Missouri Southern. Individuals from Baylor, Butler County, Cloud County, Oral Roberts, Southern Methodist, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Arkansas, North Texas and the Texas women.
The Last Time Out
Super OU freshman Jason Stanley returned from injury in a huge way, winning the 60-meter hurdles title at the Iowa State Invitational with a season-best 7.79. The time is a new school record, breaking the record that Stanley tied earlier this season by .09 seconds. It also marked the second time this season for Stanley to break the NCAA provisional standard.
Senior Michael McNamara and junior Michael Westlund once again battled in the pole vault, finishing with the same height, 17-6.5, an NCAA provisional mark. And for the second week in a row, McNamara won the title with fewer overall misses. Freshman Austin Landreth was eighth with a 16-0.75.
Redshirt freshman Aldwynn Sappleton and senior Moses Washington ran season bests in the 800-meter run, then were joined by Raoul Harvey and Ernest Lewis in the 1600-meter relay. The quartet combined for a 3:10.32, a season best and an NCAA provisional qualifying time. It was the first time this season for the foursome to beat the provisional standard and only the second time in five indoor meets for this foursome to run together.
In what may have been a preview of the Big 12 Indoor Championship, OU sophomore Leslie Dunlap finished second to Texas A&M's Erica Boren in the pole vault competition on the first day of the meet. Dunlap won the first meeting on Jan. 19. Sooner freshman Lindsey Bourne finished eighth iwith an 11-11.75.
Last Year at the Sooner Indoor
For the second time in three weeks, OU senior Alesha Peel dropped her own career-best time in the 60-meter hurdles to lower to the school record to 8.19. Peel's time was just .02 off the automatic qualifying time, nearly guaranteeing her a trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
One NCAA automatic and five provisional marks, including Peel's, were posted. OU's Michael Westlund won the pole vault with an NCAA provisional mark of 17-4.5.
Other Sooners who picked up victories included Aisha Stringer, who posted a season-best 1:25.54, and Jessica Longfors who recorded a 46-0.75 in the shot put.
In all three facility records and six meet records were set at the meet.
Sooner Honorees -- Big 12 Athlete of the Week
Sooners have earned Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors four times this season and OU sophomore Leslie Dunlap has earned the honor twice. Dunlap earned the honor Jan. 14 and again on Feb. 4. Other Sooners who have been honored include Michael McNamara (Jan. 21) and Jason Stanley (January 7).
NCAA Update
The Sooners have two automatic qualifiers for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to be held March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark. Michael McNamara became OU's first automatic qualifier when he cleared 18-0.5 at the Oklahoma Track Classic. Leslie Dunlap moved from provisional to automatic with her effort at the J.D. Martin Invitational.
OU has seven provisional qualifiers. Freshman Jason Stanley got an NCAA provisional in the 60-meter hurdles in his first collegiate meet on Dec. 1, then dropped his mark to 7.79 last Saturday. Junior Michael Westlund improved his provisional mark to 17-10.5 at the J.D. Martin and freshman Austin Landreth cleared 17-0.5 to join the provisional list.
The latest to join is the men's 1600-meter relay (Raoul Harvey, Moses Washington, Ernest Lewis and Aldwynn Sappleton). They got their 3:10.32 at the ISU Invitational Feb. 9.
Next Up
The Sooners will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the sixth annual Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships. Action in the two-day meet begins Friday and concludes on Saturday.
