ARLINGTON, Texas - Brandon Kissack finished sixth and Kelli O'Rourke finished 13th to lead the Sooners to a third-place team finish at the UTA Cross Country Open today at Vandergriff Park.
The Baylor women won the team title with 32 points while the Baylor men were first with 37 points. The Sooner women finished with 90 points and the OU men finished with 74 points.
Kissack covered the four-mile course in 20:53 while O'Rourke covered the two-mile course in 12:34.
"I was very pleased with the performance of our men," said head coach Todd Maycumber. "We were at less than full strength because of the flu. We had several runners who competed who were at less than full strength and Joey McNair was unable to go at all because of the flu," Maycumber, who also battled the flu this week, added.
"We are still learning how to compete on the women's side. I wasn't pleased with how we started the race because we didn't put ourselves in a position to be successful during the first mile of the race. We are younger on the women's side and we will take today's performance and use it as a learning experience. We've got a ways to go but the women are running better and are willing to make the commitment to improve.
"Cecil Rose may have run the best cross country race of his Sooner career," Maycumber praised. "The hard work he put in this summer showed up today and he proved today that he will be a key member of this team. On the women's side, junior Joni Alexander continues to improve and be a great leader for our team."
Rose dropped his career best in the four-mile race by 22 seconds. His previous best was 22:01 which he posted last year.
The Sooners travel to the Missouri Southern Stampede next Saturday in Joplin, Mo., for their third meet of the season.
