NORMAN, Okla. - With three weeks of fall practice down, several Sooner players have stepped up and grabbed the attention of Oklahoma Head Coach Larry Cochell.

"Tyler Johnson is swinging the bat extremely well," said Cochell of the Tulsa, Okla., native who redshirted last season and was limited to three games. "He definitely sticks out in my mind so far in terms of whose been hitting."

"As for the defense, Eddie Cornejo and Denver Kitch have been outstanding in the field, making numerous plays," said Cochell. Kitch is a sophomore from Yukon, Okla. who saw quality time last year as a newcomer. He played in 34 games while making 14 starts for OU. Cornejo is one of OU's top junior college recruits. Last year at Riverside Community College in California, Cornejo hit .370 with 50 RBI. His led his JC team to back-to-back state titles while garnering first-team all-conference honors.

Cochell believes a strength this year could be from behind the plate.

"We feel really solid with our catching tandem of Ryan Richardson and Spencer Wyman," added Cochell. Both players are newcomers. Richardson, a sophomore, comes to OU from Central Arizona College. In high school, Richardson was 20-for-25 throwing runners out while batting .480 with 11 home runs and 51 runs batted in. Wyman transferred from the University of California where he sported a 1.000 fielding percentage and threw out eight of 12 attempted base stealers in 2000. The tandem must replace last year's duo of Chris Haggard and Sean Smith. Haggard was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers.

"It's still early yet, but we are excited with what we have and what we're going to be putting on the field this year," remarked Cochell. "It going to be an exciting season."
