Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione says the $100 million Campaign For Sooner Sports illustrates OU's dedication to its student-athletes and athletic programs.

Four OU Athletic Facilities Projects Launched

Dec. 7, 2000

NORMAN, Okla. - Work on four athletic facilities projects included in the University of Oklahoma's $100 million Great Expectations: The Campaign for Sooner Sports will soon be under way following approval today by the OU Board of Regents at its regular meeting.

Approved today were the Oklahoma Memorial Stadium Improvements Project, the Athletic Training Facilities Project, the Softball Facility Addition, and the L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park Accessibility and Press Box Improvements Project.

"The University of Oklahoma has joined the ranks of those universities like Stanford, Duke, Michigan and others that are known for excellence in both academics and athletics," OU President David L. Boren said. "The facility projects approval today underlines OU's commitment to that kind of national stature."

"The University of Oklahoma is dedicated to reaching the highest possible standard of excellence in each of its athletic programs as well as to enhancing the overall experience for each of its student-athletes," said Joseph R. Castiglione, director of athletics. "We have great expectations and achieving the lofty goals that we have set for ourselves requires attention in several areas. Our aggressive $100 million Campaign for Sooner Sports addresses the area of athletic facilities and will allow our athletic programs to continue to make significant strides in performance and recruiting."

The Oklahoma Memorial Stadium Improvements Project
The $50 million Oklahoma Memorial Stadium Master Plan increases seating capacity, improves overall stadium facility structures, concession stands, restrooms and other amenities, and includes construction of a new north end zone entryway. Stadium Master Plan projects include expansion of the Lester Wilkonson Football Locker Room, expansion and renovation of the Academic Center/Athletic Offices, and expanded seating and additional lounge facilities on the east side of the stadium. The renovated stadium will provide the OU coaching staff with a powerful recruitment tool.

The Athletic Training Facilities Project
The $12 million Athletic Training Facilities Project includes a new indoor training facility for football and other facilities improvements for the men's and women's track and field teams and the Mosier Indoor Athletic Facility. The new facility will be used primarily by the Sooner football team for practice in inclement weather and for training in the off season.

The facility also can be utilized for soccer and other team practices during inclement weather. In addition, improvements are needed at the Mosier Indoor Athletic Facility, including the addition of new public facilities and the installation of a new multipurpose athletic surface inside the existing track oval. These improvements will allow the Mosier facility to be used by several of the varsity athletic teams for competition and practice as well as for special events. The proposal calls for the two buildings to be linked with a connecting building element that would contain public restrooms, storage and limited seating facilities. This project element also will provide space for new team facilities for both the men's and women's track and field teams.

The new indoor training building, to be constructed west of the Mosier Indoor Practice Facility on the site of the abandoned varsity tennis courts, will have sufficient clearance between the floor and ceiling to permit punting and field goal practice. The Softball Facility Addition Project
The initial phase of the $850,000 Softball Facility Addition Project includes construction of a team locker room facility with laundry facilities, coach and team member individual lockers, and a multipurpose team meeting room. The visiting team and umpire locker rooms also are part of the initial phase of the project.

The L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park Accessibility and Press Box Improvements Project
In 1999, work was completed on a number of improvements at L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park, including construction of a new team locker room and other team facilities and improvements to the public facilities, such as a new upper concourse and canopy roof, concessions, and restrooms. Planning will now begin for an addition to the existing press box and an elevator. The improvements will enable individuals with disabilities to access the press box and the recently completed new restroom and concession facilities on the upper concourse.

Great Expectations: The Campaign for Sooner Sports was launched in 1997 with a goal of $25 million. In October, the goal was raised to $100 million to ensure that OU's athletic facilities and programs remain nationally competitive. More than half of this amount has already been raised. Its scheduled completion date is 2003. For more information about the campaign, call OU Athletic Development at (405) 325-8000.
