NORMAN – After winning her first career event title, freshman
Ella Murphy was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Alabama's Azaraya Ra-Akbar was named Gymnast of the Week while Florida's Selena Harris-Miranda and Arkansas' Lauren Williams shared Specialist of the Week honors.
Murphy is the second Sooner to be honored this season as fellow freshman
Mackenzie Estep was named freshman of the week after the first week of competition.
Murphy had a strong meet against No. 7 Missouri, helping the Sooners to a 197.425-196.925 victory on the road. After competing just two events in the season opener, Murphy was added to the floor lineup where she earned a career high 9.875 in her debut routine.
The Frisco, Texas, native once again was a highlight on beam as she tallied her second straight 9.925 on the event. Murphy is currently ranked No. 8 in the nation and is the only freshman ranked in the top 10 on beam. On bars, she won her first event title with a 9.850.
Murphy and the Sooners return to Lloyd Noble Center for the first time this season on Friday, Jan. 23, as they host No. 5 Georgia. The meet is set for a 5:45 p.m. CT start on SEC Network and the 2025 National Championship team will be honored prior to the meet with an unveiling of the championship banner.
