NORMAN – Making her collegiate debut over the weekend, freshman
Mackenzie Estep was the named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
LSU's Kailin Chio was named the Gymnast of the Week and Florida's Selena Harris was named Specialist of the Week.
Estep had an impressive showing at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, helping lead the Sooners to a 197.500 and victories over three preseason top five teams. The Auburn, Wash., native put up at least a 9.90 on all three events she competed, becoming the first freshman since Maggie Nichols in 2017 to earn all scores of 9.9 or higher in their debut meet, competing at least two events.
Starting on vault, Estep earned a 9.90 on her Yurchenko 1.5, before adding a 9.90 on bars. Floor was the highlight as the freshman earned a 9.925 to take home a share of the event title. Estep recorded the highest finish of any freshman in the meet on both vault and floor and the second highest freshman score on bars. She was one of three Sooners to go 9.9-plus on every event they competed.
Estep and the Sooners head to Columbia, Mo., for a national championship rematch with No. 7 Missouri on Friday at 7:45 p.m. CT. This will be the Sooners' first trip to Mizzou since 2012 when the squads were members of the Big 12 Conference.
