NORMAN – Oklahoma All-American senior
Jase Summy will represent the United States this weekend at the 50th Walker Cup Match, which begins Saturday at Cypress Point Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The Walker Cup is the premier team event in amateur golf, featuring the top 10 amateurs from the United States against Great Britain and Ireland in a Ryder Cup-style format. The biennial competition includes foursomes and singles matches over two days with 26 points available.
Summy, ranked fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, is one of just six Sooners ever to compete in the Walker Cup. He joins Quade Cummins, who played in 2021, Anthony Kim in 2005, Hunter Haas in 1999, Doug Martin in 1989 and Charlie Coe, who won seven Walker Cups between 1949 and 1963, twice as captain.
"It is truly an honor to be named to the Walker Cup team and to have the opportunity to represent my country," Summy said. "Playing in this event has been a goal of mine for a long time, so to see that dream become reality is really special. I am excited to get out there, compete and play hard for the United States."
First played in 1922 at the National Golf Links of America, the Walker Cup has long been dominated by the Americans, who have won four consecutive cups and hold a 39-9-1 all-time record. Summy is one of seven Americans competing this weekend ranked in the top 10 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking, joining world No. 1 Jackson Koivun, No. 2 Ben James, No. 3 Ethan Fang, No. 4 Preston Stout, No. 6 Tommy Morrison and No. 9 Michael La Sasso.
A native of Keller, Texas, Summy has built one of the most successful careers in Oklahoma golf history. He owns three career wins, ranking fourth all-time at OU, including last week's season-opening victory at the Carmel Cup at Spyglass Hill Golf Club. That win extended a remarkable six-month stretch that features six top-10 finishes, two collegiate victories and a fourth-place finish in the Elite Amateur Series. In addition to his Walker Cup selection, Summy represented Team USA at the Arnold Palmer Cup, winning three of his four matches.
A Haskins Award watch list member, Summy has posted 41 rounds in the 60s as a Sooner with 17 top-20 finishes, 13 top-10 placements and nine top-five showings. In match play, he holds a 7-3-2 career record in collegiate events. Over the summer, he went 8-2 in amateur matches, capturing the Western Amateur championship, reaching the Round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur and going 3-1 at the Palmer Cup. His Western Amateur victory included match wins over teammates Tommy Morrison in the Round of 16 and Ethan Fang in the final.
Each day of competition features morning foursomes followed by afternoon singles matches. On Saturday, eight singles matches are played while all 10 players from each side compete in singles on Sunday. One full point is awarded for each victory while a half-point is earned for matches that are all square after 18 holes. The United States needs 13 points to retain the Cup while Great Britain and Ireland require 13.5 points to reclaim it.
Golf Channel and Peacock will broadcast the action live from Cypress Point. Peacock will carry Saturday and Sunday's foursomes from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. CT followed by Golf Channel coverage of the evening matches from 6 to 9 p.m. CT.
