NORMAN — No. 21 Oklahoma shut out No. 23 Ole Miss by a final of 2-0 Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
OU right-handed ace Kyson Witherspoon (W, 9-2) was again exceptional, going seven scoreless innings, surrendering one hit with eight strikeouts and three walks. Relievers Jason Bodin and Dylan Crooks finished OU's third shutout of the season with Crooks collecting his 11th save of the year.
A pitcher's duel ensued between Witherspoon and Ole Miss Friday night starter Hunter Elliott as the first four scoreless innings saw just two hits and a combined four baserunners across both sides.
Witherspoon escaped a jam at the top of the fifth after a pair of hit by pitches put one runner in scoring position.
Oklahoma (31-13, 12-10 SEC) broke through in the home half of the fifth with two runs on two hits. After a pair of walks to start the frame, a bunt single from freshman Drew Dickerson loaded the bases with no outs. Junior Dawson Willis hit into a fielder's choice to score one before an RBI single from fellow junior Trey Gambill pushed OU's second run across. Willis' run batted in was his third in his last five games.
Witherspoon worked around a two-out walk in the sixth before retiring the Rebels (32-14, 12-10) in order in his last inning in the seventh.
Bodin entered in the eighth for his 22nd appearance on the year and induced a double play to erase a one-out single and keep the Rebels out of scoring position.
After a two-out walk in the ninth, Crooks struck out the final batter of the game to earn his 11th save of the season.
Elliott (L, 6-3) took just his third loss of the season for Ole Miss, going 6.2 innings and surrendering two runs on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
At the plate for the Sooners, Dickerson, Gambill and sophomore Jaxon Willits registered OU's three hits on the night with Gambill and Willis batting in OU's pair of runs.
The shutout was the OU pitching staff's third of the season with Witherspoon taking part in all three. The OU junior earned his SEC-leading ninth victory and reached the century mark for strikeouts on the season with his 100th K on his eighth punch out Friday.
Bodin surrendered one hit in relief while Crooks struck out a pair and walked one in the ninth.
OU goes for its fifth SEC series win in game two Saturday at 4 p.m. CT. The game can be seen via SECN+ and heard on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF in Oklahoma or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
