Sooners Fall to Golden Eagles in Tuesday Tilt

April 22, 2025 | Baseball

NORMAN — No. 14 Oklahoma fell in a midweek matchup vs. Oral Roberts Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park, 5-3.

OU (29-11) jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff double from junior Trey Gambill, redshirt sophomore Sam Christiansen plated him on a groundout.

Oral Roberts (23-15) struck back at the top of the second, scoring two runs on three hits. Following back to back hits, a groundout scored the Golden Eagles' first run before an RBI single from Matthew Brandt put the visitors ahead, 2-1.

Returning to the lineup for the first time since March 23, senior catcher Scott Mudler roped his second career triple in the home half of the second.

The Golden Eagles put one on the board in the fourth courtesy of an RBI single to left from first baseman Ethan Fender.

Oklahoma tied the game in the home half of the fourth. OU loaded the bases on a walk drawn by frosh Drew Dickerson, single from fellow freshman Kyle Branch and Mudler hit by pitch. Junior Dawson Willis then plated two on a single up the middle to tie the contest at three.

ORU pulled ahead again at the top of the fifth, scoring on an RBI single from left fielder Cooper Combs after a leadoff double from Martell Davis. The Golden Eagles added an insurance run at the top of the ninth on a two-out Rbi single from catcher Wailele Kane-Yates to bring the final to 5-3.

The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Sooners and was just OU's third midweek loss of the season in 10 games.

Oklahoma used five arms in the contest. Left-handed pitcher Gavyn Jones made his first career start and went two innings, surrendering two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Relievers Reid Hensley (2.0 IP), Michael Catalano (2.0), James Hitt (1.0) and Jason Bodin (2.0) all saw action with Catalano (L, 2-1) fanning four to Bodin's two.

At the plate, Branch paced OU with a 2-for-4 performance while Willis plated a pair and Christiansen batted in one.

The Sooners return to SEC play at No. 10 Georgia this weekend for a three-game Thursday-Saturday series. First pitch Thursday is slated for 6 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPNU. All games can be heard on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
