NORMAN — No. 20/25 Oklahoma completed an opening-weekend sweep of Lehigh with a 12-1 win in seven innings Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
After a combined 24 runs in two games on Friday, the OU (3-0) offense picked up where it left off, scoring 12 runs on 13 hits in the finale. The pitching staff surrendered just one run on three hits, paced by starting right-handed pitcher Malachi Witherspoon's six strikeouts in five innings.
The offense went to work early and often. After Lehigh (0-3) scored the game's first run at the top of the first, Oklahoma answered with three runs on three hits in the home half. A sac-fly RBI from sophomore Jaxon Willits started the flurry before junior Easton Carmichael hit his second home run in as many days. Junior Dawson Willis doubled to left center to plate the third run of the first.
A bases-loaded walk to redshirt sophomore Sam Christiansen and a sacrifice fly from junior Trey Gambill brought in two more in the second prior to a three-run third. Sophomore Jason Walk beat out the throw on a bunt to score freshman Kyle Branch and an RBI single from Willits and RBI triple from Carmichael put OU up 8-1 after three.
A pair of scoreless innings from both teams in the fourth and fifth set up for a four-run sixth for OU. Willis plated his second run of the game on an infield single before a two-run base hit from the two-way sophomore Gavyn Jones pushed the game to run-rule territory. Branch laced an RBI single to left to tack on the last run of the game.
Witherspoon (1-0) exited after five innings, surrendering one run on three hits and two walks to accompany his six strikeouts. Jones entered in the sixth and threw a hitless frame with no walks and one strikeout before junior transfer righty Jason Rodin closed the game in the seventh with a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and one walk.
At the plate, Walk went 3-for-3, ripping three hits for the second straight game. Five Sooners had multi-hit games with Carmichael, Willits and Willis all plating a pair.
Oklahoma hits the road for the first time on Wednesday for a midweek matchup vs. UT Arlington at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The game is slated for 7 p.m. CT and can be seen via WAC International for free after creating an account. The game can be heard on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF or nationwide on The Varsity app.
