CANÓVANAS, Puerto Rico – After surging to a five-shot lead at the turn, No. 4 Oklahoma cooled off down the stretch, finishing the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic in third place – three strokes behind top-ranked Ole Miss and one back of Purdue.
The Sooners (3, -13) placed three golfers inside the top 15 as head coach
Ryan Hybl's squad posted a 13-under round to get into contention at the spring opener, held at the par-72 Grand Reserve Golf Club. Oklahoma's performance marked its fifth double-digit under-par round of the season and fourth in a row dating back to the fall.
Sophomore
Ryder Cowan (T5, -5) held a share of the lead for most of the day, but a lone bogey on his final hole dropped him into a tie for fifth, two shots off the pace. He opened with four birdies over his first eight holes, starting with a birdie on No. 2. His 67 was just one stroke shy of his career low, set in the opening round of the 2024 Ka'anapali Classic.
All-American
Drew Goodman (T9, -4) began his spring season with a 68, climbing into a tie for eighth after 18 holes. The senior rebounded from a slow start – 1-over through two holes – to card six birdies at the 7,152-yard track and secure a top-10 position.
Matthew Troutman (T13, -3) matched Cowan at the turn for the individual lead but played the back nine (after starting on No. 2) at 1-over to finish with a 69, his 10th career round in the 60s.
Jase Summy (T29, -1) closed strong, recording two birdies over his final four holes to finish under par. The junior has now posted four consecutive rounds in the red, dating back to the fall.
Stephen Campbell Jr. (T29, -1) made his season debut, competing as an individual and matching Summy with a 1-under 71. The senior finished seventh at the event last year.
Sophomore
PJ Maybank III (T44, E) was inside the top 15 heading into his final hole, but a triple bogey dropped him back to even-par for the round.
Playing as individuals,
Jaxon Dowell (T44, E) and
Cameron Cheek (T65, +3) sit outside the top 40, with Cheek making his collegiate debut on Monday.
Oklahoma led the field with 28 birdies but ranked near the bottom in pars, tallying just 50 in the 15-team event.
The Sooners will tee off alongside Ole Miss (1, -16) and Purdue (2, -14) at 6:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday for round two.
Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
