Chavez Earns Second SEC Freshman of the Week Honor

December 02, 2025 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma freshman guard Aaliyah Chavez was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season on Tuesday after helping guide the Sooners to the GEICO Coconut Hoops Classic title.

The Lubbock, Texas, native averaged 21.5 points and 4.5 assists while knocking down nine 3-pointers in victories over Coppin State and Florida State.

The consensus national player of the year and the top-ranked recruit in the 2025 class, Chavez opened the event with 14 points and three assists in a 54-point semifinal win over Coppin State. She then delivered a breakout performance against Florida State, pouring in 29 points with seven threes (7 of 14) and a team-high six assists as OU rolled to an 18-point championship win.

Her performance against the Seminoles made her the first freshman nationally since Caitlin Clark in 2021 to post 29 points, seven 3-pointers and six assists in a single game. Her 29 points rank ninth all-time among OU freshmen, and her seven threes match the third most in a game by a Sooner first-year player.

As of Dec. 2, Chavez leads all SEC freshmen in scoring (18.0 ppg) and 3-pointers made (25), and ranks second in assists (4.4) and steals (1.6).

She is the first Oklahoma freshman since Kelbie Washington in 2021-22 to earn multiple Freshman of the Week honors. With one more selection this year, she would become the first Sooner since Taylor Robertson in 2019-20 to win three in a season. Courtney Paris holds the program record with nine during the 2004-05 campaign.

Chavez and the Sooners return to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT against NC State at Lloyd Noble Center. The game will air on ESPN2 and tickets are available now.
