NORMAN – Oklahoma freshman guard
Aaliyah Chavez was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday after helping lead the No. 6 Sooners to three wins.
The Lubbock, Texas, native delivered an elite three-game stretch, averaging 21.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 55.0% from the field, 52.0% from three (13 of 25) and 100% at the line. The honor marks the first weekly conference award for the top-ranked recruit in the 2025 class and consensus national high school player of the year.
Chavez opened the week with 29 points against Kansas City, knocking down seven 3-pointers on 9 of 13 shooting. She became the first freshman nationally in at least 25 years to record 29 points on 13 or fewer attempts with seven threes, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Her seven threes were tied for the second most by an OU freshman, and her 29 points were tied for fourth most all-time among Sooner first-year players.
She added 17 points, four rebounds and three assists in Friday's win over North Alabama, highlighted by a half-court buzzer-beater that landed at No. 10 on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays.
Chavez closed the week with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in her first true road game at Western Carolina, shooting 7 of 13 with three more threes while leading OU in both assists (5) and steals (3).
On the season, Chavez averages 18.4 points, the most among all Power Four freshmen, and ranks second in the SEC in made threes, leading all conference rookies. She also paces the Sooners in assists (4.0) and steals (1.6) while adding 4.4 rebounds per game.
Chavez is the first Sooner to earn conference freshman of the week honors since Kelbie Washington (Jan. 2022).
The Sooners return to action Wednesday (Nov. 19) at 6 p.m. CT, hosting East Texas A&M inside Lloyd Noble Center. The game will air on SEC Network+ and the Sooner Sports Radio Network.
