NORMAN – Oklahoma women's tennis head coach Audra Cohen and the Sooners announced the addition of Sara Shumate to the program for the fall 2026 season on Thursday.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Shumate has climbed as high as No. 220 in the ITF junior rankings and owns career-best WTA rankings of 1398 in singles and 1164 in doubles.
"Welcoming Sara Shumate to the University of Oklahoma feels like adding another member to our family," Cohen said. "Her heart, her grit, and her love for this sport shine through in everything she does, and I'm proud she chose to be a Sooner. I can't wait to help her grow on and off the court."
A five-star prospect according to Tennis Recruiting Network, Shumate is currently ranked No. 27 nationally and No. 2 in North Carolina by the Babolat rankings. She has compiled 94 career junior wins and captured four doubles titles, including two J200 events in 2025.
"I look forward to joining such a strong women's tennis team at Oklahoma in the fall," Shumate said. "The coaches have developed a winning culture at a university with a tradition of excellence in athletics. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and excited to join the OU family. Go Sooners!'
Following competition at the NCAA Individual Championships, the Sooners will return to action in January to open the spring dual season. A full schedule will be announced at a later date.
