May 04, 2024 | Women's Tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The 18th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships with a 4-0 sweep over No. 40 Arizona on Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.

With the win, OU squads have now advanced past the first round in three consecutive seasons, including nine times in program history.

The Sooners (19-6, 11-2 Big 12) fell behind early in doubles with Arizona's No. 38 Reece Carter and Brandelyn Fulgenzi picking up a 6-1 win on court one over No. 26 Dana Guzman and Roisin Gilheany. OU managed to shift the momentum on the final two courts, as the No. 36 team of Julia Garcia Ruiz and Zdena Safarova notched a 6-2 victory on the second court over Martyna Ostrzygalo and Belen Nevehoven.

Clinching 21st doubles point of the season for Oklahoma was the pair of junior Alina Shcherbinina and freshman Chloe Noel. The duo recorded a 6-4 win on court three to give the Sooners a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Sophomore No. 37 Garcia Ruiz wasted no time in adding to the Sooners lead as she topped No. 105 Carter in straight sets at the No. 1 spot.

Junior Emma Staker put the Sooners within one point of winning with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Fulgenzi. Moments later, No. 121 Alina Shcherbinina clinched the match for Oklahoma with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot.
