Sooners Fall to Cowboys in Big 12 Final

May 25, 2024 | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas — Top-seeded Oklahoma fell to two-seed Oklahoma State 9-3 in Saturday's Big 12 Championship Game at Globe Life Field.

After sweeping its way to the tournament final with three wins throughout the week, OU (37-19) lost just its second game of its last 13 on Saturday.

The Cowboys (40-17) used 11 hits, including five for extra bases, to topple the regular season champion Oklahoma in OU's final conference matchup as members of the Big 12.

OSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly RBI. OU starting left-handed pitcher Carter Campbell (L, 4-1) settled in and worked three scoreless innings from the second through fourth with five strikeouts and just four hits allowed.

The Cowboys extended their lead at the top of the fifth with three runs on four hits.

Oklahoma got on the board at the bottom of the fifth, pushing across a pair of runs on an RBI double from junior John Spikerman and sac-fly RBI from sophomore Easton Carmichael

Oklahoma State extended the margin with a three-run home run in the seventh and pair of solo shots in the eighth. OU would get one back in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double from senior Michael Snyder to bring the final to 9-3, Cowboys.

Snyder and senior Kendall Pettis paced OU with two-hit performances. On the mound, OU used six arms on the night with Dylan Crooks, Will Carsten, James Hitt, Jason Bollman and Ryan Lambert all seeing action.

OU had a league-high seven named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team: DH Easton Carmichael, SP Braden Davis, 3B Anthony Mackenzie, 2B Jackson Nicklaus, OF Kendall Pettis, RP Grant Stevens and SS Jaxon Willits

OSU's Carson Benge was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

The Sooners shift their focus to the NCAA selection show Monday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2 as OU awaits its seeding for the NCAA tournament.

Regional sites will be announced via NCAA.com and social media Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. CT prior to the full field and seedings on Monday.

Oklahoma is expected to be a regional host and many outlets project the Sooners to be a top-eight national seed with its No. 10 strength of schedule and No. 14 RPI in the country.
