Sooners Drop Finale at Cincinnati

May 17, 2024 | Baseball

CINCINNATI — No. 12 Oklahoma was edged in the series finale at Cincinnati, 10-6.

The Sooners (34-18, 23-7) held a six-run lead through five-and-a-half innings but a late inning rally from the Bearcats (31-23, 17-13) snapped OU's eight-game win streak.

UC hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the eighth. The Sooners put two on base at the top of the ninth but a double play ended the threat.

OU clinched its seventh Big 12 series in commanding fashion Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader by a combined score of 26-14. In the finale, the Sooners rested a number of starters, starting a combined five underclassmen who stepped up.

After a scoreless first, the Sooners put up single runs in the second and third via a fielder's choice RBI from sophomore Rocco Garza-Gongora and solo home run from fellow sophomore Easton Carmichael, his sixth of the season.

OU added one in the fifth via error after senior Michael Snyder's team-best 22nd double.

The team's exchanged three-run frames in the sixth, with Garza-Gongora continuing his impressive weekend with a two-run double prior to a run-scoring single from freshman Jason Walk

In the home half of the sixth, the Bearcats scored a trio via a pair of RBI singles and RBI grounder to pull within three.

Following a scoreless seventh and top of the eighth, Cincinnati roared back in the bottom half of the eighth, scoring seven runs on three hits, three walks and a HBP. Josh Hegemann proved to be the hero, with two outs and the bases loaded, the senior hit his first career home run in grand slam fashion to put Cincy up 10-6 after eight.

The Sooners drew back to back walks to start the ninth but a strikeout and double play ended the threat.

At the plate, freshman Jaxon Willits paced OU with a 3-for-5 day with two doubles, while Garza-Gongora went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

On the mound, OU used nine pitchers in the loss with sophomore righty Malachi Witherspoon (L, 2-2) taking his second loss of the year. Starter Grant Stevens led OU with two strikeouts.

OU closed the regular season with 34 wins, the most in a regular season since 2018. The Sooners shift their focus to the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field in Arlington next week, May 21-25.

The top-seeded Sooners receive a first-round bye and will wait for the lowest-seeded winner out of the two games between the No. 4 vs. No. 9 and No. 6 vs. No. 7 seeds.

OU is looking for its second Big 12 tournament title in the past three years and fourth overall, previously winning the conference tourney in 1997, 2013 and 2022.

OU's opening contest is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT Wednesday and can be seen on Big 12 NOW on ESPN.

All games can be heard locally in Oklahoma on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app with OU play-by-play voice Toby Rowland calling the action.
