Oklahoma Named National Coaching Staff of the Year

May 10, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Oklahoma women's gymnastics head coach K.J. Kindler, associate head coaches Lou Ball and Tom Haley and assistant coach Ashley Kerr were named the National Coaching Staff of the Year, the Women's College Gymnastics Association (WCGA) announced this week. This year's award was sponsored by Athletics ICC Insurance Services (AICC).

This is the fourth time Kindler has been named the National Head Coach of the Year (2005, 2010, 2015) and third as the head coach at Oklahoma. Ball and Haley were named National Assistant Coach of Year for the third time (2010, 2020), while Kerr earned her first Assistant Coach of the Year honor. Ball, Haley and Kerr were also named the South Central Region Assistant Coaches of the Year, the ninth recognition for Ball, eighth for Haley and first for Kerr.

The Oklahoma coaching staff led the Sooners to record-breaking heights in 2024, including setting the NCAA scoring record with a 198.950 at the Big 12 Championships, en route to a third-straight and 15th-overall Big 12 crown. The 20-year-old record was shattered as three Sooners combined for five perfect scores – just the second time in NCAA history a team earned a perfect score on every event in the same meet. The 2024 squad also set program records on bars (49.825), beam (49.800) and floor (49.825), while securing an NCAA record NQS score of 198.500.

Under Kindler and her staff, Oklahoma held a No. 1 national ranking for the entire regular season, including No. 1 rankings on vault, bars and beam and a No. 2 ranking on floor. Oklahoma was 29-0 in the regular season, concluding the year at 36-2 after a 20th-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships. Along with claiming the Big 12 Championship, the Sooners also claimed their 14-straight regional crown under Kindler.

Oklahoma earned 12 scores of 198 or higher in 2024, including 11 in a row, to record an NCAA record NQS mark of 198.500. The 12 scores of 198-plus are the most in a single season by any NCAA program. The Sooners recorded four scores over 198.600 on the season and now hold five of the top 10 team scores in NCAA history.

Three Sooners concluded the regular season as the No. 1 ranked athletes on their respective events. Jordan Bowers and Audrey Davis shared the top spot on the uneven bars while Ragan Smith claimed the top spot on balance beam.

The coaching staff led two athletes to individual titles as Davis and Faith Torrez shared the beam national title and Davis earned the bars crown. At the Big 12 Championship, a Sooner brought home every individual title as Torrez, Bowers and Smith combined for five perfect 10s. Bowers was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Year before securing a South Central Region Gymnast of the Year nod and a spot as a Honda Sport Award Finalist.

They coached four gymnasts to a combined 14 perfect 10s and helped lead Oklahoma gymnasts to 10 All-Big 12 honors, 15 regular season All-America honors and 10 NCAA All-America honors.
