Bowers, Ball, Haley, Kerr Earn WCGA Regional Honors

April 07, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Junior Jordan Bowers was named the South Central Region Athlete of the Year, while associate head coaches Lou Ball and Tom Haley and assistant coach Ashley Kerr were named the regional Assistant Coaches of the Year, the Women's College Gymnastics Association (WCGA) announced this week.

Bowers, who was also named the 2024 Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, helped lead OU to a No. 1 ranking for the entire regular season, a 29-0 record and an NCAA team scoring record of 198.950. The Lincoln, Neb. native finished the year ranked No. 1 on the uneven bars, No. 2 on floor and in the all-around and No. 5 on vault. She earned regular season All-America honors on all four events and in the all-around after competing in every meet this season at a 100 percent hit rate.

At the 2024 Big 12 Championship, Bowers did something no Oklahoma gymnast had done before earning three perfect scores (vault, bars, floor) in one meet. Only five gymnasts in NCAA history had achieved the feat before Bowers. Her three perfect scores earned her the Big 12 Championship on vault, bars and floor and the all-around as she secured an OU program-record 39.925 in the all-around. Her 39.925 is fourth best in NCAA history and tied for the highest all-around score this year with LSU's Haleigh Bryant. Bowers is also the only OU gymnast to earn four Big 12 titles in one meet. At the conclusion of the meet, Bowers was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Year after earning five Big 12 Gymnast of the Week honors and four All-Big 12 nods (vault, bars, floor, all-around).

As a junior, Bowers has earned six perfect 10s to bring her career total to nine. She has tallied two on bars, one on vault and three on floor this season. Her three floor perfect 10s have happened in consecutive meets, dating back to March 10 at Arkansas. With four career perfect 10s on floor, she now boasts the most perfect 10s on the event in OU history. Her 10.0s on all three events this season have given her multiple 10s on vault, bars and floor, making her just the second gymnast in OU history to earn multiple 10s on three events.

The coaching trio of Ball, Haley and Kerr led Oklahoma to a No. 1 national ranking for the entire regular season, including No. 1 rankings on vault, bars and beam. The trio aided Oklahoma to a 29-0 record in the regular season and a 14th consecutive regional title over the weekend. They guided OU to 12 scores of 198 or higher, including 11 in a row and an NCAA record 198.500 at the Big 12 Championship on March 23.

The coaching staff coached three athletes to a sweep of the Big 12 individual championships with every title being earned with a perfect score. The group led the Sooners to 47 team event wins and 70 individual event titles throughout the regular season. They coached four gymnasts to a combined 14 perfect 10s and helped lead Oklahoma gymnasts to 10 All-Big 12 honors and 15 regular season All-America honors.
