April 03, 2024 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – Oklahoma women's tennis head coach Audra Cohen and the Sooners welcomed Emma Ghirardato to the program for the 2024-25 season today.

Ghirardato, who hails from Italy, has climbed as high as No. 64 in the ITF junior rankings.

"We are ecstatic to add Emma to our team," Cohen said. "We visited her family in Italy, and we knew she'd be a good fit for OU. She has the values and character we look for in a team player. Her tennis game has huge potential that she doesn't see yet, but that's why she's coming to Oklahoma! She has to learn how big and powerful her game really is!"

Ghirardato has won two singles titles, including the Palermo J3, and three doubles titles, including Vrsar and Asuncion, in her junior's career. Additionally, Ghirardato was a U16 Doubles Italian National Champion in 2021 and has made appearances in three Junior Grand Slam tournaments: Roland Garros, US Open and Wimbledon.

"From day one, I was amazed by the coaches' passion and dedication to their mission," Ghirardato said. "They have outstanding facilities and a very cool group of teammates. There is only one!"

The Sooners are currently 12-5 (7-2 Big 12) for the 2024 season and are set to close out their home slate this week. They first face No. 36 BYU on Thursday at 5 p.m. CT, and quickly turn around for a match with No. 26 Texas Tech on Saturday at noon for senior day.
