ORLANDO, Fla. – Two crooked-number innings and a gutsy start from left-handed pitcher
Kelly Maxwell led the No. 2-ranked Oklahoma softball team to a 10-2 series-opening win over UCF on Friday evening in Orlando.
The Sooners (43-4, 19-3 Big 12) plated five runs in the first and four in the seventh to support Maxwell, improving to 3-0 all-time against the Knights (28-19, 10-12 Big 12). Oklahoma's win lowers its "magic number" to five for the outright Big 12 regular season championship and four for a guaranteed share of the title.
Maxwell improved to 15-1 on the season with 6.1 innings of one-run ball, scattering seven hits and two walks. She struck out five and threw 76 of her 121 pitches for strikes, working at a 62.8% strike rate on the evening.
Oklahoma opened the first with a five-spot as each of the first eight Sooners to bat reached base.
Jayda Coleman (2-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) legged out an infield single,
Ella Parker (1-for-4, BB, RBI) reached on an error and
Tiare Jennings (0-for-4, BB, R) drew a walk to fill the bases.
Kinzie Hansen began a three-hit night by singling home Coleman,
Kasidi Pickering (2-for-3, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI) singled in a pair then
Alyssa Brito (2-for-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) launched a two-run home run to left-center.
Coleman tacked on another run in the third with an opposite-field solo shot to left, pushing Oklahoma's lead to 6-0. The Knights responded two innings later with an RBI double in the fifth to make it a five-run game.
OU struck for four more in the seventh, providing Maxwell more insurance.
Avery Hodge (0-for-1, BB, R, RBI) and Coleman each drew bases-loaded walks,
Rylie Boone (1-for-4, RBI) singled home a run and Parker plated Hodge with a groundout.
UCF added its final run on a solo shot following Maxwell's exit.
Coleman and Jennings extended their on-base streaks to 33 and 26 games respectively while OU improved to 9-0 in series openers this season.
