Sooners Push Win Streak to Eight, Beat WSU

April 23, 2024 | Baseball

NORMAN — No. 18 Oklahoma pushed its win streak to eight games Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over Wichita State at L. Dale Mitchell Park to sweep the season series over the Shockers, three games to none.

OU's eight-game win streak marks the longest since the 2017 team won 12 straight.

The pitching affair saw the Sooners plate three in the third and Shockers score one in the fourth for the only runs of the game.

OU (25-14) utilized seven pitchers on the night, with starting RHP Brendan Girton hurling two scoreless innings to start, surrendering just one hit and one walk to go with three strikeouts.

The Sooners plated three on two hits in the third. Getting the action started was consecutive walks drawn by freshman Isaiah Lane and junior John Spikerman, making his return to the lineup for the first time since March 16. With two on and one out, senior and reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Bryce Madron laced an RBI double to right field to score one. The next batter, sophomore Easton Carmichael, followed suit with a two-run single up the middle to score Spikerman and Madron.

At the top of the fourth, Wichita State (21-21) scored their only run of the game on a solo home run to center.

The OU pitching staff combined to close the game with five scoreless innings on three hits, with just one WSU baserunner making it past second base the rest of the way.

Will Carsten (1.0 IP), Carter Campbell (2.0), Reid Hensley (1.0), Carson Atwood (1.0), Ryan Lambert (1.0) and Malachi Witherspoon (1.0) all saw action on the night.

Campbell (W, 2-0) earned the win in relief, striking out one in his two scoreless, hitless frames to get the Sooners across five innings. Hensley fanned a pair while Carsten and Atwood struck out one. The junior transfer Lambert showed off his velocity with a trio of pitches touching 100+ mph. Witherspoon earned his second save of the year in the ninth inning, putting the Shockers down in order to finish the game.

At the plate, Carmichael, Madron and freshman Jason Walk provided OU's three hits, with Carmichael bringing in a pair for his ninth multi-RBI game of the year.

OU continues its home stand at L. Dale Mitchell Park with the Red River Rivalry series in Norman this weekend vs. Texas (25-17, 11-7), April 26-28. First pitches are set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (all CT). All games can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+.
