Deal No-Hits Tulsa in Run-Rule Win

April 16, 2024 | Softball

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Sophomore left-hander Kierston Deal fired her first career no-hitter as the No. 2-ranked Oklahoma softball team run-ruled Tulsa 8-0 in six innings on Tuesday evening at Hall of Fame Stadium.

The Sooners (39-4, 15-3 Big 12) recorded their second no-hitter of the season with the blanking of Tulsa (27-15, 12-6 AAC), allowing just two baserunners on a hit batsman and a catcher's interference.

Deal provided a brilliant effort while improving to 9-1 on the season, retiring 16 of 18 batters faced with four strikeouts. The left-hander put away the first 11 she faced before back-to-back reached with two away in the fourth on the hit-by-pitch and catcher's interference. She recorded a strikeout to end the threat, then went 1-2-3 in both the fifth and sixth to close things out. Sooner right fielder Rylie Boone and third baseman Alyssa Brito each made terrific diving grabs to rob the Golden Hurricane of hits, supporting their starter's strong effort.

OU's sophomore is now 9-0 over her last 10 starts, allowing just three runs on 17 hits (.117 BAA) and nine walks in 43.0 innings of work.

An Alyssa Brito (2-for-3, HBP, R, 3B) one-out triple in the third sparked an early Sooner crooked number as Tiare Jennings (1-for-3, BB, R, RBI) followed with a walk then Ella Parker (1-for-3, R, RBI) singled her home. Two batters later, Alynah Torres (1-for-3, R, 2B, 2 RBI) laced a two-run double into the left-center gap to make it 3-0 Oklahoma.

Deal continued to carve through the Tulsa lineup in the next three frames. OU blew the game open with a five-run fifth, highlighted by a Cydney Sanders (1-for-1, 2 BB, R, HR, 4 RBI) grand slam. Rylie Boone (0-for-2, BB, R) drew a walk following Sanders' blast, moved to second on a Brito hit-by-pitch and scored the game's final run on a Jennings "walk-off" RBI single into center.

Jayda Coleman went 1-for-4 with a first-inning leadoff single to extend her on-base streak to 30 games. Sanders reached in all three of her trips while Brito's 2-for-3 night accounted for the lone Sooner multi-hit effort.

Oklahoma recorded its 19th shutout and 23rd run-rule win of the season. The Sooners close their midweek schedule 6-0 and wrap up their regular season non-conference slate with a 24-1 record.
