OU Closes Regular Season at The Thunderbird
April 11, 2024 | Men's Golf
NORMAN — Oklahoma men's golf will close its regular season on Friday and Saturday when it takes part in The Thunderbird at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix. The two-day, 54-hole event tees off on Friday morning and teams will play 36 holes before wrapping up the event with the final round on Saturday.
The 17-team field features six ranked teams, including No. 14 Oklahoma. Fourth-ranked Arizona State plays host to the event and is the tournament's highest-ranked squad. Ten of the nation's top-50 teams will tee off at Papago this weekend.
The 7,551-yard, par-71 course is one of Phoenix's top tracks and is surrounded by the Papago Buttes. Designed by Billy Bell, the creative mind behind Torrey Pines, Papago is the home of Arizona State Golf.
The Sooners won the event in 2022, firing a 821 (-31) to hold off the Sun Devils and a loaded field. The team's 821 was the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in tournament history. Oklahoma has produced one medalist — Jeff Mixon in 1997, who finished at 7-under.
Oklahoma's lineup card features Ryder Cowan, Jake Holbrook, Ben Lorenz, Stephen Campbell Jr. and Jase Summy. Drew Goodman will compete as an unattached individual.
