NORMAN –
A strong start from sophomore
Kierston Deal and three key hits by freshmen led the No. 2/1 Oklahoma Softball to a 9-0 run-rule win over Texas A&M Commerce on Wednesday evening at Love's Field.
Oklahoma (19-1, 0-0 Big 12) received 3.0 excellent innings from Deal and 2.0 scoreless frames from sophomore
Paytn Monticelli on the way to its 12th shutout of the season with the midweek win over the Lions (5-17, 0-0 Southland). OU's two pitchers allowed just three baserunners, retiring 15 of 18 faced with eight strikeouts.
Deal settled in following a leadoff single in the first, retiring the next 12 she faced while striking out five. The left-hander threw 30 of her 39 pitches for strikes (76.9%) in an extremely efficient outing.
Freshman right fielder
Kasidi Pickering (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI) opened the scoring in the first with a ringing double off the right field wall, plating both
Rylie Boone (1-for-2, BB, R) and
Kinzie Hansen (1-for-1, BB, R). Fellow freshman
Ella Parker (1-for-2, R, HR, 3 RBI) followed with a laser three-run home run to right to cap off a five-run Sooner first.
OU manufactured its fourth run of the game in the second as
Cydney Sanders (1-for-2, R, 2B) doubled, advanced to third on a Boone bunt single then crossed home on an
Alyssa Brito (0-for-1, RBI, SF) sacrifice fly.
Pickering continued her terrific night by ripping an RBI double into left to score
Riley Ludlam (0-for-1, R) in the third.
Jayda Coleman (1-for-1, BB, R, RBI) singled her home with a hot shot back up the middle and advanced to second as the centerfielder misplayed the ball. Two batters later,
Avery Hodge (1-for-2, 2B, RBI) poked an RBI double into left-center to give Oklahoma a 9-0 lead through three.
Monticelli closed things out in the final two frames to secure the shutout. The right-hander fanned three in her 2.0 innings of work and put away six of eight, working around a single and a walk.
The Sooner lineup did not strike out in the game and have not struck out more than three times in each of their last 10 games.
With the win following Sunday's loss, Oklahoma extended its streak to 10 straight wins and five straight shutouts following a loss. OU has outscored its opponents 56-0 in its last five games after a loss.
