Sooners Run-Rule Golden Eagles

March 26, 2024 | Baseball

NORMAN — No. 25 Oklahoma got back in the win column in a big way Tuesday night, run-ruling Oral Roberts by a final of 10-0 in seven innings.

OU starting left-handed pitcher Grant Stevens (W, 4-0) went six innings, surrendering no runs and scattering ORU's only two hits to go with two walks and four strikeouts. Relievers Jace Miner and Reid Hensley finished the job, with Hensley striking out a pair in the seventh.

OU saw seven players register a hit with six recording multi-hit games, led by senior Bryce Madron's and junior Jackson Nicklaus' three base knocks each.

The shutout was the Sooner pitching staff's third of the season and Tuesday marked the first time ORU had been shut out since March 12, 2023. OU's three shutouts this season after 24 games already eclipses the 2023 team's total of two in 60 games.

OU scored early and often Tuesday night, putting up crooked numbers in three of the seven frames the team went to the plate. Starting in the first, RBI singles from senior Anthony Mackenzie and Nicklaus scored a pair before an attempted double steal saw an OU runner thrown out at second but Mackenzie was able to race home from third for OU's third run of the inning.

In the third inning, redshirt senior Kendall Pettis pushed the lead to four on an RBI groundout before he doubled home Mackenzie in the fifth for his second RBI in as many at-bats. The next at-bat in the fifth, freshman Jaxon Willits hit a double off the wall in left center to plate Pettis.

The Sooners walked the game off in run-rule fashion with four runs on four hits in the seventh. A bases-loaded groundout from sophomore Rocco Garza-Gongora started the flurry, plating Nicklaus. Freshman Jason Walk followed up with an RBI single to left field prior to a run-scoring double from Madron.

Sophomore Easton Carmichael brought in the game-ending run on a single to right field that scored Madron for the 10th run, inducing the 10-after-7-innings run rule.

The Sooners close an eight-game homestand this Thursday-Saturday by hosting a three-game set vs. Lamar (19-5, 3-0 Southland) at L. Dale Mitchell Park. First pitches are set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

All three games can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and heard locally in Oklahoma on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app. Live stats can be found at OUStats.com.
