NORMAN – For the eighth time in the last nine seasons, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team has earned the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Championships, the NCAA announced Monday. This is the 14
th consecutive season the Sooners have earned a No. 1 seed for regional competition.
The Sooners will be the No. 1 seed in the Ann Arbor Regional facing No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 Michigan, No. 16 NC State, No. 17 Ohio State, No. 23 Kent State, No. 25 Penn State, Illinois and Ball State. Individual all-around and event specialists from Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Lindenwood, Pittsburgh and Western Michigan will also compete for a chance to advance to nationals.
The top 36 teams based on the national qualifying score were selected for regional competition. The committee named the top 16 teams and seeded them in the bracket. Seeding determined at the time of selections will be maintained throughout the championship.
Teams 17-36 were placed geographically at one of the four regional sites. Nine teams will compete at each of those four sites, with the top two at each site advancing to Fort Worth, Texas, for the April 18-20 NCAA Championships. The other three NCAA regional sites are Berkeley, Calif, Fayetteville, Ark., and Gainesville, Fla.
The regional will be held April 3-6 with the Sooners slated to begin competition in the second round on Thursday, April 4. The regional will have a recovery day on Friday, April 5, between the second round and finals.
The top two teams and the top all-around competitor (who is not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. In addition, the top event specialist on each event who is not part of an advancing team or all-around competitor advances to the national championship (in that event only).
The Sooners are currently 29-0 on the season and hold an NCAA record National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 198.500. OU will look to earn its 14th consecutive regional title and 20
th straight NCAA Championships berth. Last weekend, the Sooners claimed their 15
th Big 12 Championship with an NCAA record 198.950 team score.
This season, the Sooners have faced just two of the eight Ann Arbor Regional teams in Alabama and host Michigan. OU defeated both teams inside Lloyd Noble Center earlier in the year.
The Sooners will be led into competition by head coach K.J. Kindler, the 13-time Big 12 Coach of the Year. Kindler has guided OU to 13 NCAA regional titles, 14 Big 12 Championships and 16 NCAA Championships appearances. Under Kindler, OU has achieved 12 top-three NCAA finishes since 2010 and has won six national championships, including back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023.
