NORMAN — Oklahoma baseball completed the three-game conference-opening sweep of UCF with a 14-2 run-rule win Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (9-5, 3-0) outscored the Knights (9-4, 0-3) by a margin of 29-8 on the weekend en route to OU's first conference-opening sweep since 2019.
"The really good part about the weekend was everybody picking each other up and having quality at-bats," said OU head coach Skip Johnson. "Somebody gets out, they pick that guy up and get a big hit. The same thing with the bullpen, which was really big. I thought Jamie (Hitt) was really good, pitched really well, we played good defense behind him and got big strikeouts when we needed them."
Oklahoma's offense was explosive throughout Sunday's contest, registering 18 hits with a trio of three-run home runs, capped by sophomore Easton Carmichael's walk-off blast in the seventh.
On the mound, senior James Hitt (W, 1-1) went 5.2 innings, scattering four hits with one run and two walks to go with five strikeouts.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Sooners got on the board in the second via sac-fly RBI from redshirt senior Kendall Pettis.
Carter Frederick opened things up in the fourth with OU's first three-run home run of the day, the junior transfer's first homer as a Sooner.
UCF responded with a solo home run in the fifth before Oklahoma rattled off six unanswered runs to go up 11-1 through six innings. Following a Jackson Nicklaus RBI single in the fifth, the Sooners put up a five-spot in the sixth with RBIs coming from senior Bryce Madron, Carmichael and redshirt senior Michael Snyder.
Snyder's blast was his team-leading third home run of the season and ran his season RBI total to 20.
After UCF avoided the run rule at the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly that scored one, the Sooners walked it off in the bottom frame off the bat of Carmichael.
Eight Sooners registered a hit in the game, with six bringing in a run, led by Carmichael's 4-RBI showing. Carmichael, Snyder, Nicklaus and freshman Jaxon Willits all had three hit performances. Willits' trio of hits marked his first multi-hit game of the frosh's collegiate career.
On the mound, OU utilized four pitchers with Hitt earning the win while junior Jace Miner (0.1 IP), sophomore Kyson Witherspoon (0.2) and senior Carter Campbell (0.1) all saw action to close the contest.
Oklahoma continues the homestead with Bedlam presented by Phillips 66 coming to Norman Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. CT. The non-conference matchup with the Cowboys marks the first midweek Bedlam meeting at L. Dale Mitchell Park since 2018.
The game can be seen on ESPN+ and heard locally on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app.
