Women's Hoops Returns to AP Top 25 at No. 24

February 05, 2024 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN — Winners of six straight and in sole possession of first place in the Big 12, Oklahoma returned to the AP Top 25 on Monday as the No. 24 team in the country.'

The Sooners, named ESPN's National Team of the Week on Monday morning, knocked off then-No. 2 Kansas State and in-state foe Oklahoma State last week and then-No. 10 Texas the week prior. The Sooners appear in the poll for the first time since they were ranked 22nd on November 20, 2023.

After opening the season 6-5, Oklahoma (15-6, 9-1 Big 12) has been one of the hottest teams in the nation, winning nine of its last 10, including six straight. Senior forward Skylar Vann, who earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors last week, leads the team in points (15.8) and rebounds (7.2), but OU boasts five total players that post 8.0 PPG. But OU's defense and turnover margin have proved the difference in conference play. Oklahoma surrenders 65.2 PPG against league foes, fifth-best in the Big 12, after wrapping the non-conference slate ranked 13th in scoring defense. The Sooners turn it over a league-low 12.4 times per game in conference games and have the best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.63) in the Big 12.

OU's debut earlier this year in the AP poll marked the third consecutive season that OU has appeared in the Top 25 under head coach Jennie Baranczyk. The Sooners have appeared in the poll in 25 seasons (20 since 2000).

In ESPN's latest bracketology, Oklahoma was tabbed as a No. 10 seed and the Big 12's automatic qualifier. The Sooners have played the nation's 27th-toughest schedule and have faced or will face 10 teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament.
