NORMAN – Junior Jordan Bowers and senior Bell Johnson were named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and Event Specialist of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Wednesday. This is the third weekly honor for Bowers this season and 14th of her career. For Johnson, this is the first weekly honor in 2024 and second of her career.
The duo were instrumental in leading OU to a program record 198.675 Friday night over West Virginia. The mark is also the fourth-highest team score in NCAA history and included another record performance with a program record 49.800 on beam. All five competition scores from the duo counted in the Sooners 19th victory of the year.
Bowers had a career night, earning a 39.800 in the all-around to become just the third OU gymnast in history to record a mark of 39.800 or higher, joining legends and NCAA All-Around Champions Maggie Nichols and Anastasia Webb. Bowers recorded a 9.9 or higher on all four events for just the second time this season, taking home the bars and floor titles with matching 9.975s along with the all-around title. Her 9.95 on beam helped the Sooners to tie the program record on beam with a 49.800. Bowers is now the No. 2 ranked gymnast in the all-around, the No. 1 ranked athlete on bars and No. 2 ranked athlete on floor.
Johnson a floor specialist, helped lead the Sooners to an incredible 49.700 on the event - tied for fourth highest in program history. In the No. 2 spot, she earned a season-best 9.925 to help propel OU to the record-breaking team score. Johnson's score would be prove to be crucial to the Sooners incredible performance after a lower score in the No. 3 spot. Johnson's score allowed OU to count all scores of 9.925 or higher on the event and earn their second highest score of the season on the event.
The Sooners are back in action Friday night for a top-10 matchup against Michigan inside Lloyd Noble Center. The meet is set for a 6:15 p.m. start and tickets can be purchased here. The meet will air on ESPN2 with John Roethlisberger and Aly Raisman on the call.
