Sooners Downed in Bedlam Dual

February 18, 2024 | Wrestling

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma won three matches in Sunday's Bedlam dual with Oklahoma State but fell to the Cowboys 34-9 at Gallagher-Iba Arena to close its regular season.

The 25th-ranked Sooners (5-7, 2-6 Big 12) were victorious at 149, 174  and 285 pounds but ultimately were downed by No. 2 Oklahoma State (14-0, 8-0 Big 12).

"We knew it was going to be a tough dual here," head coach Roger Kish said. "I'm happy with how some of these guys performed, but at the end of the day we had a few guys who maybe didn't step up to the challenge tonight and I think that's something we have to go back and figure out."

Conrad Hendriksen and Gabe Vidlak opened the dual at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Hendriksen was matched up with No. 10 Troy Spratley, who won by fall at 1:03. Vidlak racked up five escape points, but surrendered six takedowns and a reversal to drop the bout 20-5 via tech fall.

The Cowboys would pick up their third straight bonus point win at 141 pounds, as No. 8 Tagen Jamison pinned OU's Carter Schmidt at 0:54.

As it was in the first Bedlam dual on Dec. 10, No. 21 Willie McDougald got the Sooners on the board at 149 pounds with his highest ranked win of the season. The redshirt junior was able to prevent No. 15 Jordan Williams from landing a single shot, riding a first period takedown to a 5-2 victory.

"When you compete in an environment like this, it's good preparation for what's to come as we head into the post season," Kish said. "I'm really proud of the guys who stepped up."

No. 30 Jared hill was defeated by No. 11 Teague Travis, 11-1 in a major decision at 157 pounds. In a rematch from this season's first edition of Bedlam, No. 21 Cael Carlson dropped his bout at 165 pounds to No. 3 Izzak Olejnik, 8-2.

Tate Picklo put on a show at 174 pounds versus No. 20 Brayden Thompson, claiming a 5-2 upset win thanks to a last-second takedown in sudden victory. With the victory, the Mustang, Okla., product snapped a seven-match losing streak in duals while picking up his first career Bedlam win in the process.

Giuseppe Hoose looked to play spoiler while matched up with No. 2 Dustin Plott, but was overtaken early and lost the 184-pound bout via tech fall, 19-4. Adding on for the Cowboys with a third tech fall, No. 17 Luke Surber defeated OU's Carson Berryhill, 17-2.

Kish's team left Stillwater with one more win at the heavyweight division when Josh Heindselman tallied a late reversal in the third period to knock off No. 9 Konner Doucet and finish the regular season with an 18-4 record. With the win, the three-time NCAA qualifier creates momentum as he heads into Big 12s, where he entered the day ranked 12th at 285 pounds. Heindselman's Bedlam win on Sunday marked the fifth of his career.

"The most important aspect moving forward is finding a level of confidence heading into Big 12's," Kish said. "Having these guys truly believe that they're capable of success and reaching the pinnacle of the Big 12 Tournament is going to be big for us."

The Sooners now turn their focus to the Big 12 Championships slated for March 9-10 in Tulsa, Okla., at the BOK Center. For ticketing information, fans can access Big 12 tickets online
