Sooners Hold Intrasquad Scrimmage, Eyes on 2025 Season

December 07, 2024 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team held its annual red-white intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.

The white team defeated the red squad in a competitive meet that served as a public preview for the 2025 season.

"I thought we did a really good job," head coach Mark Williams said. "We hit almost 90% overall, which for this time of year was great. The guys made good decisions, and I thought we looked really professional for this point in the year. The guys looked like they were ready to do the gymnastics they had planned. Things went pretty quickly with the new rules, so I think we adapted pretty well. It's just a starting point, but I'm pretty happy overall with how we did."

It was the Sooners' first opportunity to compete on all six events in front of judges and fans with the new international code of points and four-up, four-count format in collegiate men's gymnastics.

"I thought it was a great meet," senior captain Emre Dodanli said. "We had a lot of energy, and all the younger guys stood up and did their job. I'm really proud of both teams. I liked the fact that it was always a competition between both teams on every event. I just enjoyed my last red and white meet. I feel like the team is standing in a good place right now. We're still building. We're going to use this to tweak some of the skills that we're doing, tweak our routines and build off of that to start our season off really strong."

Senior captain Zach Nunez added: "I think today went very well. We brought the energy from the very first routine to the last. There were a lot of fans here, which we're very thankful for. There's a lot of room for improvement, but I think we're in a very good place, especially right now."

The Sooners open the 2025 season against Air Force at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12 at McCasland Field House. OU also welcomes Illinois (Jan. 25), Stanford/Greenville (Feb. 8) and Michigan/Simpson (Feb. 15) to the Field House. Oklahoma's meets against Stanford and Michigan will feature multiple Olympians, including Dodanli and members of Team USA's bronze medal squad at the Paris Olympics.
