NORMAN – The Oklahoma wrestling team dropped its first dual match of the season to Oklahoma State 35-3 Friday night at McCasland Field House.
The No. 21 Sooners (3-1, 2-1 Big 12) were victorious at 149 pounds, but ultimately were downed by the No. 3 Cowboys (5-0, 4-0 Big 12).
"I think this is going to be a great learning opportunity for our guys," head coach Roger Kish said after the dual. "We'll be able to go back and identify some adjustments we need to make on the coaching side to get this team in better position to close the gap on some of these close matches."
No. 20 McDougald pulled off an upset of Oklahoma State's No. 13 Carter Young in ride-outs, 7-6, to put the Sooners on the board.
McDougald trailed early in the bout, taking a 2-4 deficit into the second period. The Sooner narrowed the margin by adding an escape point in the middle frame. Young earned his escape to start the final period, but a pair of stalling points awarded to McDougald sent the match to extra time. The foes went back-and-forth in sudden victory which resulted in a stalemate. In the end, the junior from Niagara Falls, N.Y., won the match with riding time advantage.
With the win, McDougald improved his record to 6-1 on the year, including a 4-0 mark in dual action.
