Men's Golf Leaps to No. 1 in Coaches Poll
October 11, 2024 | Men's Golf
NORMAN – For the first time since May 2022, the Oklahoma men's golf team is ranked as the No. 1 team in the country.
Powered by back-to-back wins against top-ranked fields, the Sooners jumped seven spots in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll on Friday. Oklahoma has been ranked No. 1 nationally in five of the last seven seasons.
Oklahoma received 388 points, five more than previous No. 1 Auburn, who OU has topped at each of the last two events the Sooners played in.
In three tournaments this season, head coach Ryan Hybl's team has posted two wins at the Valero Texas Collegiate and Ben Hogan Collegiate. Off to one of the best starts in program history, the Sooners have faced 41 teams this season, including 21 in the top 25 and 11 in the top 10. In those head-to-head matchups, Hybl's squad boasts an impressive 38-2-1 record and is 5-0 against the three teams they lost to or tied with since the season opener.
Senior leader Drew Goodman has led the Crimson and Cream in the fall, registering three straight top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish at the Ben Hogan Collegiate. Three other Oklahoma golfers – Ryder Cowan, Jase Summy and Matthew Troutman – each own at least one top 10.
The Sooners return to the course for the Stephens Cup, slated for Oct. 21-23 at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. The prestigious stroke and match play event will pit OU against (RV) Arkansas, No. 12 Florida State, No. 19 Oklahoma State, San Diego State and (RV) SMU. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
