OU Student-Athletes Record 3.24 Cumulative GPA, Extend 3.0 Streak
January 29, 2024 | Athletics
NORMAN — University of Oklahoma student-athletes continued their long trend of classroom excellence by posting a 3.24 cumulative GPA during the fall 2023 semester, the OU Athletics Department announced Monday. The performance fell just shy of the department record mark of 3.25 earned in spring 2023 and resulted in a school-record 24th consecutive semester of surpassing a 3.0 cumulative figure.
OU's streak of student-athletes posting at least a 3.0 GPA began in spring 2012. The 3.24 cumulative fall GPA reflects the overall academic performance of those student-athletes from their first semester of collegiate enrollment through the completion of the fall 2023 term.
Seventeen of OU's 19 athletics teams posted better than a 3.0 cumulative GPA and two programs produced their highest cumulative GPAs: football (2.97) and wrestling (3.23).
"Our Sooners' success has never been limited to the scene of competition," said OU Vice President and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione. "Consistently, Oklahoma student-athletes lead in the classroom, pursuing academic excellence with the same commitment as they do championships. This is now the 24th semester in a row of hitting the 3.0 mark or higher — it's tremendous. Semester after semester, we count ourselves fortunate to celebrate these milestones. My sincere appreciation goes to all those who make this possible, from our student-athletes themselves, to our first-class faculty, academic advisors and coaching staff who support them."
Following are some additional fall semester academic accomplishments of OU student-athletes:
• Of the 552 student-athletes included in the latest grade report, 396 (72%) earned a 3.0 or higher GPA during the fall 2023 semester.
• A total of 104 student-athletes (19%) registered a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall 2023 semester.
• OU student-athletes have collectively earned a cumulative GPA of 3.10 or higher in 11 of the last 12 semesters.
