NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team has taken over the top spot in the national rankings this week, with a two-week average of 416.975, after registering the highest score in the nation Saturday night.
The Sooners scored a 420.350 at the Rocky Mountain Open, which is the highest score nationally this season by nearly seven points. OU notched a 413.600 in its season opener on Jan. 13.
Oklahoma, which leads the nation in three events, sits ahead of Stanford (413.800), Nebraska (409.600), Michigan (407.517) and Illinois (402.700) in the top five.
The Sooners hold the national lead on floor exercise (70.025), pommel horse (69.800) and parallel bars (69.175), and rank second in vault (71.525) and high bar (69.075) and third on still rings (67.875).
Individually, redshirt sophomore
Fuzzy Benas leads the nation in the all-around with his 85.200 recorded on Saturday night. Junior
Emre Dodanli leads the country on floor with his 15.000 average after registering a career-high 15.250 Saturday.
Fifth-year senior
Jack Freeman is tied for third nationally in floor average (14.300), while Benas ranks fifth (14.100). Senior
Zach Nunez ranks third on pommel horse (14.525) and sophomore
Ignacio Yockers ranks fifth (14.400). On still rings, freshman
Tas Hajdu ranks sixth with his 15.125 average.
Benas ranks fifth in the country on vault (14.575) while freshman
Max Bereznev ranks sixth (14.525). On parallel bars, Benas ranks second (14.800) and Dodanli ranks fifth (14.300). Dodanli and Freeman are in a three-way tie for third on high bar (14.100). Freshman
Colin Flores ranks fifth in the all-around after notching an 80.800 on Saturday night.
Oklahoma travels to Champaign, Ill., this weekend to face No. 5 Illinois on Sunday. The meet is set for a 4 p.m. start.
