MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Sooners led early and battled late at No. 12 Kansas State on Wednesday night but couldn't overcome the Wildcats on the road, falling 74-57 and dropping their first game of the conference slate.
Oklahoma's (9-6, 3-1 Big 12) Nevaeh Tot scored 13 points and grabbed eight boards, while Payton Verhulst neared a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds in a return to her home state of Kansas, but it wasn't quite enough to leave Manhattan with the win.
Oklahoma opened the night strong, jumping out to a 10-2 lead early in the contest, and the OU defense held the 'Cats to a 1-of-9 start from the floor. But a Kansas State (16-1, 4-0 Big 12) offensive burst to close the frame knotted the game at 15 after the first. KSU slowly built its lead in the second quarter, using 10-2 and 8-3 runs to hold a 37-25 advantage at the break. The 25 points marked OU's fewest in the first half this season.
The Sooners held K-State scoreless for the first 4:17 of the second half, but the Wildcats closed the quarter on a 10-6 run and took an 11-point lead into the final frame. The Sooners got within eight points early in the fourth and seven points later in the frame, but K-State, who entered the day with the Big 12's best defense, did enough to come away with the 17-point win.
OU shot 28%, and K-State shot 43% on the night despite both teams making seven 3-pointers. The Sooners outrebounded the 'Cats 49-42 and held KSU to five offensive boards. The Sooners only turned it over 13 times but managed just 12 assists on 19 made buckets.
The Sooners take on Texas Tech at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+.
