Nunez, Benas Qualify for U.S. Championships at Core Classic

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Oklahoma senior Zach Nunez and redshirt sophomore Fuzzy Benas earned qualification to the U.S. Gymnastics Championships with their performances at the Core Classic Sunday night at NOW Arena.
Nunez qualified for the U.S. Championships in pommel horse and parallel bars while Benas qualified in p-bars and high bar. The duo will join alumnus Yul Moldauer and freshman Max Bereznev (a pre-qualifier) at the U.S. Championships, set to take place Aug. 24-27 in San Jose, Calif.
In all, 17 current Sooners competed at the Core Classic on Sunday night. Click here for complete results.
"It was a good opportunity to have guys compete in a meet, work hard through the summer, make improvements on their difficulty and kind of come to this event as a team," OU head coach Mark Williams said. "I'm happy that we brought the numbers that we did. For the guys that are new, I thought it was important for them to get a taste of what we do. I'm happy that we had a fairly large group getting out there and competing and getting in front of judges. It's a good way to wrap up the summer."
Nunez finished fifth overall in pommel horse with a score of 13.807, which was the second-highest pommel score of the Senior Men's second session. He also scored a 13.950 on parallel bars. Benas put up a 13.950 on parallel bars and a 13.400 on high bar, which placed him second and third, respectively, in the session. The marks earned both gymnasts enough points to qualify for the USA Gymnastics national championships later this month.
Senior Dan Simmons placed in the top 10 of the second session in three events: rings (13.350; fifth), parallel bars (13.650; seventh) and floor exercise (13.500; 10th). Super senior Jack Freeman placed fourth in the session on floor (14.000) and 10th on high bar (12.850). Sophomore Kelton Christiansen placed fourth in the session on high bar (13.300), sophomore Adriel Perales finished fourth on p-bars (13.900) and sophomore Mac Seyler finished eighth on pommel horse (12.907). Redshirt freshman Leo Koike competed for the first time in an Oklahoma uniform after missing last season with an injury, placing seventh in the session on vault (14.150), 12th on high bar (12.800) and 13th on floor (13.250). Incoming freshman Colin Flores placed 10th in the session on pommel horse (12.500) and 11th on floor (13.400).
