Williams Named to Team USA for 3x3 World Cup

August 11, 2023 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma freshman forward Sahara Williams has been chosen by USA Basketball to represent the United States at the 2023 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary, from Aug. 30-Sept. 3.

Williams, a highly rated prospect from Waterloo, Iowa, is among the four players on the team. She previously contributed to Team USA's gold medal win at the 2022 3x3 World Cup.

Rated as the No. 23 player in the country in the 2023 class by ESPN and Prospects Nation, Williams achieved recognition as a McDonald's All-American. She was part of both the 2023 USA Women's Nike Hoop Summit team and the 2023 Jordan Brand Classic All-Star team. In her senior year at Waterloo West (Iowa) HS, she starred, posting averages of 21.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.2 steals, earning her a place in the IPSWA Class 5A All-State first team.

Williams continues the legacy of standout Sooners who have represented the U.S. internationally. Notably, Courtney Paris (2005) and Gabbi Ortiz (2015) competed in the FIBA U19 World Cup, with Paris winning back-to-back gold medals in the U20 and U21 FIBA World Cups in 2006 and 2007.

The full 2023 3x3 U18 National Team includes Katie Fiso, Sarah Strong, Mikaylah Williams along with Oklahoma's Williams. Kelly Carruthers, who was an assistant coach on last summer's 3x3 World Cup team that Williams played on, will lead the team as head coach.

Different from traditional 5-on-5 basketball, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, with teams clearing the ball beyond the 2-point line after a score, defensive rebound or steal. The game is won by the first team to reach 21 points through 1-point field goals or 2-pointers from beyond the arc, or if leading when time expires.
