Dakota Harris was selected in the 11th round (335th overall) of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, the final day of the MLB first-year player draft.
A junior from Land O' Lakes, Fla., Harris started all 46 games in which he played at shortstop during the 2023 season. He led the Sooners with a .328 batting average and registered seven home runs, 12 doubles and 48 RBIs, despite missing 14 games with injury. He also scored 27 runs, drew 19 walks and was 6 for 9 in stolen bases, while posting a .516 slugging percentage and a .403 OBP.
Harris was a Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist for the nation's best shortstop and received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention recognition. He recorded multiple hits in 18 games (including two games with four hits) and was second on the team with 13 multiple-RBI contests. Harris played his first season in Norman in 2023 after transferring from Polk State College in Florida.
A total of 296 Sooners have been selected in the MLB Draft, including 21 first rounders. At least one player has been drafted every year since 1970, and Oklahoma has had at least one player picked in the top 10 rounds in 47 of the last 53 years. Prior to this year, OU had at least one player drafted in the top 10 rounds every year since 2011 and at least two players drafted every year since 2009.
