NORMAN —
Easton Carmichael,
Dakota Harris and
Kendall Pettis each registered two hits, but the Oklahoma baseball team dropped its Bedlam series opener to No. 25 Oklahoma State 13-2 Thursday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (29-23, 10-12 Big 12) and Cowboys (36-15, 14-8 Big 12) continue the series at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Mitchell Park.
Oklahoma scored in the third inning on a bases-loaded walk by
Easton Carmichael that plated Harris, who reached on a walk. Carmichael, who recorded both of OU's RBIs, singled in the eighth and drove home pinch-hitter
Patrick Engskov with a base hit in the ninth. Harris singled in the first inning and doubled in the seventh, while Pettis singled in the third and seventh frames. The Sooners outhit the Cowboys 12 to 10, but allowed nine walks and five hit batters, and committed two errors.
"I think we got a little tighter with men in scoring position and didn't swing at strikes, swung at balls out of the zone," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "Credit to them, they made good pitches and didn't give free bases. That's the separator in the game. You lose the momentum of the game when you give free bases and don't play defense. You have to start winning innings, like we have been doing, keep the momentum on your side, throw strikes and make plays in the infield. That's baseball. Tomorrow it's zero to zero. That's the unique opportunity of the game. You get to wake up tomorrow and it's a new opportunity."
OSU scored a run in the first, two in the second and four runs in the third and fourth innings, then added one run in the fifth and seventh frames. Designated hitter Colin Brueggemann hit a grand slam in the third inning to make the score 7-0, and then hit a solo homer in the sixth. Tyler Wulfert hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Starter
Braxton Douthit (4-5) went 3.0 innings and took the loss for Oklahoma while OSU reliever Evan O'Toole (6-1) earned the win with 5.0 innings in relief of starter Nolan McLean.
Carson Atwood pitched 2.0 innings and
Aaron Calhoun pitched 2.1 frames in relief.
Colton Sundloff, the last of five OU relievers, tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
