NORMAN — Two-time defending national champion Oklahoma has been tabbed the No. 1 overall seed in the 2023 NCAA Division I Softball Championship and will host the NCAA Norman Regional at Marita Hynes Field, May 19-21.
It marks the fourth straight season the Sooners (51-1, 18-0 Big 12) have been the No. 1 seed. The program has been a national seed for each of the past 16 seasons, hosting a regional for the 12th year in a row. This is the fifth time in program history that the Sooners have been the top-seeded team, also earning the No. 1 spot in 2013, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
The four-team, three-day event features the Sooners taking on Hofstra (19-25, 16-7 CAA) at 4 p.m. CT Friday on ESPNU before Missouri (34-24, 7-17 SEC) faces California (33-19-1, 9-14-1 PAC 12) at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
Friday's winners will square off in the first of three games Saturday at 2 p.m., while Friday's losing teams will face off in an elimination game for game two (4:30 p.m.) of Saturday's tripleheader. The loser of Saturday's first game will take on the winner of the day's second game in an elimination game later Saturday night (7:30 p.m.). The winner of Saturday's final game will take on the winner of the day's first game on Sunday (1 p.m.) with an if-necessary rematch scheduled for later on Sunday.
The winner of this weekend's regional will advance to the NCAA Super Regional round against the winner of the Clemson Regional, hosted by 16-seed Clemson, the following weekend with the goal of reaching the 2023 Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma has made the NCAA Tournament 29 straight seasons overall and every year of head coach Patty Gasso's tenure since 1995 (tournament was not played in 2020). The Sooners have advanced to the WCWS each of the past six seasons.
In 2022, OU reached its 15th WCWS in program history, culminating in the program's sixth and second consecutive national championship. The Sooners have won four of the past six WCWS crowns.
With six national titles (2000, '13, '16, '17, '21, '22) Oklahoma trails only UCLA (12) and Arizona (8) for most in NCAA history, and no other team has more than two.
Season-ticket holders that requested postseason tickets will be charged Monday, May 15th in accordance with the confirmation email they received from the OU Ticket Office.
A limited number of remaining general admission all-session tickets will go on sale to the public on Tuesday at 10:00 am. General admission all-session tickets will be $75 a piece and will get you into each game of the tournament. If tickets remain, single session seats will go on sale Wednesday at 10:00 am.
