NORMAN – Future Sooner duo Hannah Scheible and Keira Wells will conclude their club careers close to their future home. Before heading to Norman for the 2023-24 season, Scheible and Wells are set to compete in the Women's Development Program National Championships this weekend (May 12-14) at the Oklahoma City Convention Center. This marks the third year USA Gymnastics has hosted combined men's and women's national championships.
Scheible clinched her spot to the national championships at the Region 5 Level 10 Regional Championships on April 13 after placing in the top three on every event and in the all-around. The Kimball, Mich., native captured regional titles in the all-around and on vault and beam, and finished second on floor and third on bars. Scheible earned her second career perfect 10 on vault and a season-high 39.125 in the all-around at the regional event.
Earlier in the year, Scheible competed at the prestigious Nastia Liukin Cup in Louisville, Ky. (Feb. 24), where she captured the vault title in the senior division, scoring a 9.900. At last year's Women's Development Program National Championships, Scheible earned gold on beam, silver in the all-around and bronze on vault. The two-time Development Program National Team member (2021, '22) was crowned national champion in the all-around and on beam and floor at the 2021 Women's Development Program National Championships.
Wells qualified to the national championships at the Region 3 Level 10 Regional Championships in mid-April when she won the all-around, vault and beam, and posted a second-place finish on floor. The Augusta, Kan., product posted her second career perfect 10 on vault at the regional event. Wells has also captured all-around crowns in her last five meets of the 2023 season.
Bringing the power on vault, Wells is a four-time level 10 national qualifier (2018, '19, '21, '22) who has won the last three national vault titles (2019, '21, '22). Along with her 2021 national vault crown, Wells also placed sixth in the all-around at the 2021 Women's Development Program National Championships.
Women's divisions for the national championships are determined by age, separated into six junior and six senior groups designated A-F (Jr. A-F, Sr. A-F). All-around and event titles will be awarded in each division and held at the conclusion of each session. The top-four all-around gymnasts in each division will be named to the Women's 2023 USA Gymnastics Development Program National Team and will be invited to attend a national training camp later in the year.
Representing Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio), Scheible will compete Saturday evening at 6:45 p.m. CT in the Senior C division, while Wells will perform Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. CT in the Senior D division, competing for the Region 3 team (Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming). Both Scheible and Wells officially signed with Oklahoma on Nov. 9, 2022.
Regions in the women's artistic discipline are determined by geographic location (state) and the Regional Super Team champion will be crowned over the weekend.
