Oklahoma in Second, Three Sooners in Top Five At Boilermaker

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A pair of Sooners share fifth, and the Oklahoma men's golf team is in second place after posting a 280 (-4) in the opening round of the Boilermaker Invite on Friday afternoon.

Ben Lorenz and Jase Summy signed for matching 69s at the par-71 Ackerman-Allen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Sooners (T2, -4), who led the field for most of the round, will enter the event's final day one stroke behind Rutgers.

Lorenz (T5, -2), a junior fresh off his first collegiate win, opened with two quick birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 before a bogey on the ninth moved him back to 1 under. But a 1-under par 34 on the way in was enough to share fifth after 18 holes.

Summy's (T5, -2) card was more colorful. Sharing fifth with Lorenz, the Keller, Texas, product bogeyed his opening hole before sinking an eagle on No. 6 and a birdie on No. 8. His back nine was up and down as the freshman paired three birdies and another eagle with two bogeys and a double-bogey to finish his day in fifth and four shots back of the lead.

Jake Holbrook (T3 -3) was the Sooners' low round of the day, playing unattached from the OU contingent. The junior was the solo leader at 6 under thru 10, but a trio of bogey down the stretch bumped him into a tie for third at 3-under par.

Patrick Welch and Drew Goodman rallied for a 71 (E) to grab a piece of 19th after day one. Stephen Campbell Jr. isn't far behind, rounding out the Oklahoma lineup with a 72 (+1). Jaxon Dowell, who joined Holbrook in the unattached groupings, shared 25th with Campbell Jr.

The two-day, 54-hole event showcases 13 teams in a standard five-count-four format. Saturday will feature 36 holes of continuous play, beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT. The Sooners, looking for their fourth win of the season, are paired with the Scarlet Knights (1, -5) and Wisconsin (T2, -4).
