OU Takes Second in NCAA Semifinals, Advances to Saturday's Four on the Floor

April 13, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics

FORT WORTH, Texas – The top-ranked and No. 1 overall seed Oklahoma women's gymnastics team is still dancing and one step closer to its ultimate goal.

The Sooners finished in second place in the NCAA Championships Semifinal II on Thursday night with a 198.1625 in front of 4,665 fans at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, to advance to the NCAA finals for the 10th consecutive year. Oklahoma's score marked its highest ever in NCAA semifinals action and fifth highest at an NCAA Championships semifinals or finals meet.

OU is the only program to advance to every NCAA finals competition since 2013.

Oklahoma will be joined in Saturday's "Four on the Floor" by No. 5 seed Utah (198.2250), which rallied in the final rotation on beam to win the evening session. No. 4 seed UCLA took third place with a 197.9125 and No. 9 seed Kentucky finished fourth with a 197.1250.

Joining OU and Utah in Saturday's finals will be No. 6 seed LSU (197.4750) and No. 2 seed Florida (197.4000) from Thursday's afternoon session. No. 7 seed California came in third place with a 196.9125 and No. 13 seed Denver took fourth with a 196.5000. The Sooners and Utah are the only two teams that reached the 198 mark during Thursday's semifinals.

"I felt like the team had incredible energy, but we definitely left a lot of tenths on the floor; there's no doubt about it," said OU head coach K.J. Kindler, who will be seeking her sixth national title with the Sooners on Saturday. "We can probably come up with six more (tenths) alone with landings on bars and beam and vault. To me, the gymnastics was phenomenal, but the landings could have been better tonight."

The highlight of the night for OU was super senior Olivia Trautman winning the outright NCAA vault title with a 9.9500. She became the seventh Sooner to win an NCAA individual national championship and the first since OU legend Anastasia Webb captured the all-around, vault and floor crowns in 2021.

The Sooners found themselves in third place after an opening-rotation 49.4875 on bars, trailing first-place UCLA (49.5125 on beam) and second-place Utah (49.5000 on floor). OU sophomore Danielle Sievers started the meet with a 9.9000 after a stuck landing and was followed by fellow sophomore Danae Fletcher's 9.8500 and Trautman's 9.8875. Senior Ragan Smith dazzled in the No. 4 position with a team-high 9.9250 before Jordan Bowers registered a 9.8750 and junior Audrey Davis scored a 9.9000 in the anchor position.

OU recorded four scores of at least 9.9000 on beam in the second rotation and climbed to second place with a 49.5500, but UCLA widened its advantage to 0.188 with a 49.7125 on floor. In her lone event, senior Jenna Dunn got the Sooners started on the right foot with a 9.9125. She was followed by a career-high-tying 9.950 by Trautman, who reached that mark for the third time this season and finished fourth on the night. Bowers added a 9.825 in the No. 3 spot and freshman Faith Torrez scored a 9.925 on her first NCAA Championships routine, including a perfect 10 from one judge. Davis was solid with a 9.8625 while Smith anchored the lineup with a 9.900.

The Sooners made a statement in the third rotation and jumped to first place with their 49.6625 on floor, highlighted by gorgeous 9.9500 routines by Bowers in the No. 3 position and Torrez (tied a career high for the 10th time this season) in the No. 5 spot. The first five Sooners in the lineup all scored 9.900 or higher on the event. Davis started with a strong 9.900, while Smith was highly entertaining with a 9.925 in the No. 2 spot. Sievers continued the momentum with a sparkling 9.9375 and Fletcher anchored the lineup with a 9.850.

With a 148.7000 heading into the final rotation, the Sooners led second-place Utah (148.5375), third-place UCLA (148.400) and fourth-place Kentucky (147.850). In a vault lineup consisting of six Yurchenko 1.5s, Sievers led off OU with a 9.875. Super senior Allie Stern and junior Katherine LeVasseur followed with a pair of 9.900s before Bowers and Davis scored 9.8125 and 9.8375 in the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Trautman closed OU's night in grand fashion by vaulting to an individual national championship with a powerful 9.9500 in the anchor position.

"Obviously, I've strived to do that all of my years here," said Trautman of her vault title, "and I wouldn't be here without my vault coach, Lou (Ball), and my team and, honestly, the trainers who got me here. When I first started the season, vault wasn't really in the picture, so just having that opportunity to come out tonight was super amazing and I feel very blessed."

Saturday's NCAA finals are scheduled for 3 p.m. CT and will be televised by ABC for the third straight year. Streams of each individual event will be available on ESPN+.
